A cisguy discovers he’s been hypogonadal since a testicular trauma years ago and goes through hormone replacement therapy… until he decides he’d rather stay hypogonadal. This was a terribly relevant episode for me, as I’m going through USCIS paperwork myself as well.  Episode 13, Season 8 of House MD portrays effects of testosterone including confidence or bravour at the expense of a healthy communication process; hurtful speech during bouts of extreme anger; and willingness to commit personal resources to and take risks for the advancement of one’s career. How real are these changes that one individual undergoes as sex hormone levels oscillate from estrogen- to testosterone-dominant?  For years I thought the confidence and willingness to take risks to advance my career came with the strength of acceptance and social accord to my self image. But here in Bali I encounter criticism and little affirmation in contrast to my experience in the west (including the western part of Indonesia). Yet I surge forward with cock-a-mamy projects that scratch my artist’s itch for expression and my change agent’s itch to build connections between people.
